MKA Hike 4-5 Feb 2012: Night Hike

The MKA Hiking Club is pleased to announce our next Hike scheduled for Saturday 4th February and Sunday 5th February 2012.

The Hike will take place at Mount Snowdon, North Wales (the second highest Mountain in the UK) and will involve a ‘night walk’ – the first of its kind.

The main purpose of this trip is to develop strength and stamina by walking long distances through the night. It will most certainly be an experience not to be forgotten. A good level of fitness is required to attend this Hike as it is more challenging than usual.

THOSE PARTICIPATING IN THE EUROPEAN HIKE IN JUNE 2012 ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND THIS HIKE AS THE FIRST TRAINING SESSION.

The proposed schedule is as follows:

Saturday 4th Feb:              8.30pm                 - Arrival at Campsite, Isha’a Prayer, setup tents (exact address of the Campsite to be confirmed and provided at later date)
9.15pm                - Setup Camp fire, serve Dinner and prepare Packed Lunches (everything to be prepared on site)
10.30pm               - Arrival at Mount Snowdon base Car park & Begin Hike up Mount Snowdon (along the PYG track)
Sunday 4th Feb:                 1.30am                 - Estimated arrival on Summit & ‘Lunch’
4am                       - Arrival back at Car park & travel to Campsite
4.30am                 - Arrival at Campsite and sleep
                                                7am                       - Fajr Prayer
12pm                     - Wake up, prepare Breakfast on Campfire
1pm                       - Zohr and Asr Prayers & Leave for Home

This schedule or any amendments to it must be strictly adhered to by all Khuddam taking part in the Hike. Therefore, anyone wishing to attend must take part in all activities of the trip and ensure its success by helping and co-operating fully with the organisers.

The aim of this trip is for Khuddam to learn to become self-sufficient, hence setting up campfires, preparing our own meals and sleeping in tents. These skills are essential to learn and we hope each Khadim will participate fully.

Essential Equipment:

As we are walking overnight and sleeping in tents, warm and waterproof clothing is absolutely necessary. Any Khuddam not wearing the appropriate equipment to Hike will not be allowed to Hike – this is a matter of safety. If you need help finding the correct equipment please contact us in advance.

  • Waterproof Jacket and Trousers
  • Warm inner Fleece Jumper/Jacket – 2 fleece tops would be better for extra warmth
  • Sports breathable t-shirt (similar to football shirt material, clima cool – this prevents sweat sticking to your body)
  • Warm Hat and Gloves
  • Mountain climbing boots (If you are planning to buy boots – look for Vibram sole and Gore-tex outer layer, any brand is ok just make sure it’s comfortable and your toes don’t touch the front)
  • Climbing socks
  • Rucksack
  • Spare t-shirt, trousers, socks, underwear, jumper and towel (in case you get wet)
  • Sleeping Bag – to sleep in the tent you will need a 3 or 4 season sleeping bag (don’t bring a blanket and pillow)
  • Toiletries

The best place to buy mountaineering clothes and boots is TK Maxx. Stores can be found across the UK and they have most items at heavily discounted prices. Any waterproof clothes should ideally be Gore-Tex material (this is the best waterproof material). For clothes, the best quality brands are Berghaus and North Face. However, other brands such as Karrimor, Craghopper, Regatta etc are also good and much cheaper in cost.
Sleeping bag can be bought from Army & Navy store, Millets, Blacks, or any outdoor equipment store.

Tents will be provided but if you want to bring your own tent that would be fine.

A small payment will be required from each Khadim on the day of - £6 for the campsite and £3 for food costs.

Dinner, packed lunch and breakfast meals will be provided along with water bottles. No other food is required to be brought along.

There are no central Transport arrangements. You should travel yourself or speak to your local or Regional Qaid to see if a group are going locally or regionally.

PLEASE CONFIRM YOUR ATTENDANCE ON THIS HIKE BY RETURN EMAIL TO: hikingclub@khuddam.org.uk
