Cambridge University - Abdus Salam Prize Distribution Event Report:
On Tuesday 13th January 2009 Mohtamim Amoor-e-Tuluba (Naseer-Ud-Din Shams) attended the Graduate Students Conference at the Cavendish Laboratories in Cambridge University. This conference was set up to present the 2008 Abdus Salam Prize winner with their award.
The Abdus Salam Prize is a most prestigious award which has been sponsored by Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya UK since 2007. Professor Abdus Salam was a Nobel Laureate, F.R.S; Professor of Theoretical Physics at the Imperial College of Sciences and Technology, London, and President of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics Trieste Italy. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1979, for his theoretical unification of the two fundamental forces of nature. He was also very active in promoting scientific research in developing countries. For these reasons, and in light of the fact that Professor Abdus Salam had a massive impact upon enhancing the field of Science, the Cambridge University staff and students hold the Abdus Salam Prize in the highest regard.
One of the members of staff at the university explained the significance of the prize to the students by saying;
"In many respects the main part of the prize is the honour of winning and being able to add the prize to their CV. In academic circles this counts for a lot and the name Abdus Salam, together with the Cavendish gives some kudos"
There were around 20 applicants to this year's competition, in which students had submitted their research projects in the field of Physics. With the competition being so stiff, along with the winner, three runners up prizes were also awarded. Each of the winners presented a summary of their research project to the audience of the conference. The event was attended by around 100 students during the day and seemed to be well appreciated by all. The audience consisted mainly of physics students from Cambridge University, along with some of their professors.
After the final presentation of the day, which was given by the winner ofthe Abdus Salam Prize, Mohtamim Amoor-e-Tuluba MKA UK (Naseer-Ud-Din Shams Sahib) who was representing Sadr Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya UK (Tommy Kahlon Sahib), was invited to address the audience. During his address Shams Sahib emphasised the importance of conducting research with a humanitarian focus, as was the focus of the great scientist - Professor Abdus Salam - who always held dear the purpose of serving mankind in all his works. Shams Sahib concluded his address by reading a short message from Sadr Majlis MKA UK to the audience:
Message from President, Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association UK, Mr. Tommy Kallon
In the name of Allah, most Gracious, ever Merciful.
I would like to thank and congratulate all those who took part in presenting their research for the Abdus Salam Prize, in particular the prize winner Mr. Gareth Conduit.
Prof. Abdus Salam was and will always be a prominent figure in the field of scientific research and it is very appropriate for his life and works to be celebrated at Cambridge University, a place where he spent many years studying to achieve the great heights we all know about.
Prof. Abdus Salam lived by the motto that scientific thought is the common heritage of mankind. I hope and pray that you all strive to accomplish as much as, if not more than what this great scientist achieved.
Yours Sincerely,
Tommy Kallon
