Muslim Leader: Resolve to Spend New Year Serving Others

The national leader of a Muslim youth group has called on its members to respond to the global economic crises by devoting more time in service to humanity.

In his New Year Message, Tommy Kallon told young Muslims that despite the challenge posed by the current financial meltdown, true peace could only be obtained by putting others first.

Mr Kallon, President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association which has more than 4,000 members in the UK, said it was essential for Muslim youth to make greater spiritual strides in 2009 and lead the way in serving society’s less fortunate:

“The nation euphorically celebrated the arrival of the new year with magnificent firework displays across major cities in the country. Sadly, for many this only occasioned a pretext to drink, socialise and engage in merry-making."

“For us the new year should be marked by much loftier concerns. We should resolve more than ever before to become more righteous, more sincere in our devotion and more eager in our response to the call of duty towards others regardless of people’s background or beliefs."

“The dawn of each year should remind us that we are on this earth only for a finite time. It is my sincere hope and prayer that young Muslims are able to stand tallest amongst the servants of humanity."

“May our Lord make 2009 the year of our true spiritual awakening. A very happy and blessed new year to you all!”
