• MKA Gillingham gears towards 2012

The Khuddam of MKA Gillingham have volunteered their services at the Modern Pentathlon World Cup, Medway 2010, which took place at the all new £11 million facility at Medway Park, Gillingham, between 8th and 11th April 2010.

Mike Evans, Head of Volunteering for the event was contacted and welcomed the idea for a pool of resources from the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association to assist during the course of the week.

Modern Pentathlon is a multi-sport event comprising five disciplines of fencing, swimming, horse riding, pistol shooting and running and is recognised as one of the most testing of all Olympic events. Athletes tackle all five disciplines in a single day of competition.

Over the course of the week, our volunteers were tasked with a variety of responsibilities. Khuddam assisted a few days prior to the event meeting with the organisers and helping to set up tables and chairs in and around the complex. The Khuddam were also at hand during all four days of the event, providing volunteers from 10.00am until 3.00pm each day, as well as being present to assist the Pentathlon Committee on each day.

Khuddam were responsible for serving lunch to all of the competitors and other volunteers, manning tea stations, emptying the bins, providing drinks to the athletes around the grounds, directing athletes to the various areas where their disciplines were taking place and liaising with the volunteering staff throughout the day to determine other duties.

As the designated photographer was unavailable on most of the days, one Khadim, a photographer by profession, was asked to take photographs of the event.

Mike Evans, Head of Volunteering said “The Ahmadiyya Muslim Association have been a tremendous help over the week and have made our lives a lot easier. We are indebted to your support and look forward to working with your organisation as we embark upon the Olympics 2012 campaign”.
