Baitul Futuh Alleyway Litter Picking

Baitul Futuh Alleyway Litter Picking

After months of preparation and communication with the local council, on Saturday 27th February 2010, Baitul Futuh Region were able to take part in helping the local community by cleaning the alley way opposite Baitul Futuh Mosque. 19 Khuddam from the Region met at Baitul Futuh at 10.00am to make their way across the road and make a start on the mammoth task of cleaning the much neglected alley way which is used by pedestrians on a daily basis, but unfortunately was not a pleasant sight to see.

Khuddam geared up with gloves, litter pickers, litter bags and wore high-visible jackets with the Baitul Futuh Region emblem and “Love for All, Hatred for None” on the back. Khuddam went inch deep into the derelict area and started disposing of all visible rubbish. A few minutes into the task, the passion and commitment of Khuddam started to show. They were adamant that if a job needed doing, it should be done right. I turned around to see where the noise of breaking and cracking was coming from, and saw a Khadim breaking branches with his bare hands off a tree that was overhanging the public pathway. Seeing this, Umer from Morden could not hold himself back and wanted in on the action. He ran across the road to Baitul Futuh and came back with all sorts of tools including cutters, a broom and a large, deep metal shovel. More khuddam joined in. I could see it in their eyes; this was no longer just about litter cleaning.

The rest of the Khuddam started moving along the alleyway, and within a couple of hours, we managed to clean ¾ of the alleyway filling approximately 30 litter bags with rubbish which included: a tyre, pushchair, suitcase and many glass bottles.

We were also fortunate to receive a visit from a member of Merton Council, Pat DeJesus, who is in charge of Merton Waste Management. She was pleasantly surprised to see so many Khuddam actively involved and was very pleased with the noticeable difference we had made. She expressed how greatly appreciative she was of the effort we had made, and took pictures for the local press. We discussed future plans for this area and are thinking about how we can carry out a face-lift of the area, making it a pleasurable sight to see.

Masha'Allah, the Khuddam really enjoyed themselves, to the point I had to drag them away! Khuddam expressed both their joy and ideas in regards to this project and were looking forward to the next session. We hope and pray that through this project we can further establish a relationship with the wider community surrounding our Mosque and help us to play a part in keeping the area around Baitul Futuh clean. Insha'Allah.
