Honesty and Truthfulness

Honesty and Truthfulness

My dear brothers Khuddam and Atfal,

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah.

May the Lord of mankind open unto you the gates of His mercy and may He so ordain that you are always accompanied by the supplication of His angels.

The five-yearly spectacle of the United Kingdom’s General Election season is reaching its climax. And with that, the fervent petitions of each of the main party leaders become increasingly vociferous. In doing so, one finds their speech becoming progressively more insightful in the hope that they might woo the electorate into offering them a mandate to govern.

Ours is an apolitical organisation. That is, we hold no affiliations to one party or another. However, as the rhetoric between party leaders escalates, the negative campaigning and denigration of one’s opponent is becoming ever more apparent. Replicated by the media, it reflects a society in which it is sometimes acceptable to belittle one’s opponent rather than outshine them through higher standards of conduct. Sadly evident is the absence of the golden principles of truth and absolute justice.

As this conduct escalates, one cannot help but be reminded of the example of the Holy Prophet of Islam (saw) whose inspiring model upheld absolute justice in speech and conduct under all circumstances. Indeed, he is known to have given verdicts in favour of idolaters and Jews over Muslims where justice and truth demanded it and by doing so he illustrated in practice the excellent moral values inculcated by the Glorious Qur’an. Allah says in the Holy Qur’an:

And when you speak, observe justice, even if the concerned person be a relative, and fulfil the covenant of Allah. That is what He enjoins upon you that you may remember.” (Ch.6:V.153)

This verse juxtaposes the adherence to justice alongside fulfilling the covenants of Allah. That is not without reason. When one forgets the covenants to Allah, they often forget their obligations to His creatures.

The distressing symptoms of such forgetfulness are visible and palpable in all walks of life. There are those who converse with each other in soft and sweet voices seeking to please them despite their hearts overflowing with insincerity and animosity. There are those who speak with flattery and false praise forgetting that Allah is All-Knowing. For those however who speak straightforwardly, with kindness and behave according to such standards, Allah has promised a mighty reward. Allah says:

“O ye who believe! Fear Allah and say the right word. He will reform your conduct for you and forgive you your sins. And whoso obeys Allah and His Messenger, shall surely attain mighty success.” (Ch.33:V.72)

Therefore, a true Muslim will always speak with justice, honesty, kindness and humility. He will never overlook principles of right and wrong in favour of other loyalties that contravene his duties to Allah. This is the standard we must strive to achieve.

And so, particularly during this time, I remind you my dear brothers that as representatives of the last people of Allah we must exhibit the finest example of justice, kindness, honesty and humility in our speech and our conduct. Those virtues should stand as a gleaming model that our fellow citizens can aspire to and for which Allah shall, Insha’Allah, reward us abundantly. May Allah make it so and bless you all profoundly. Ameen.

Wassalam.

Yours humbly,

Tommy Kallon.
